One of the main degradation factors of the coastal microbasins of the Valparaiso region corresponds to forest fires as well as to urban expansion and infrastructure works that have meant a significant decrease of the native plant surface that contains species of high geobotanical and endemic value, like the Chilean palm (Jubaea chilensis). This palm is found in the schlerophyllous forest formation of central Chile (30°-37° S.), the area in which most plant fires occur in Summer. From the fire records of the 2000-2012 period, the critical sectors in the study area with the highest impact from fire have been defined. This information is complemented with the application of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Landsat images and Theos-I images of different Summer seasons.
