Abstract

In 1908, Spanish artist Fernando Álvarez Sotomayor (1875-1960) arrived in Santiago to fill in the vacant space as Chair of Nature Drawing, Color, and Composition at the School of Fine Arts, after the death of Cosme San Martín (1850-1906). The new master found a group of enthusiastic students who would become his disciples during his short stay. Pas-chín Bustamante (1890-1934) was part of this group, known as Generación del Centenario. These diverse artists -who did not come from well-off sectors of society-were motivated by the Galician master, and shared a common interest in popular local themes. Today, they are recognized as the Generación of 13, after an exhibition they set up that year. They are considered the founders of Painting that is strictly Chilean and the initiation of Chilean Social Art is attributed to them. Paschín, driven by his desire of originality and modern renovation searched for alternatives to Painting, which took him towards Applied Arts. He went on to form part of the group of artists that, after the closure of the School of Fine Arts in 1929, traveled to Europe to study the trades that were thought would boost the development of the industry in Chile. Bustamante was one of the masters during the first years of the School of Applied Arts, a school that with 40 years of existence should be regarded as the parent school of Design in our country.
