Bullying among students at school is defined as the negative physical or verbal actions that take place, repeatedly over time, between perpetrators and victims. Its associated symptoms include solitude, absenteeism risk, and fear of school. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between bullying victims and perpetrators and its related symptoms at school. The scale used in the survey was based on an official bullying scale distributed by the Ministry of Education in Chile. The modification included the distinction between perpetrators and victims, considering cyber, verbal, and physical bullying, and the bullying symptoms of students. The resultant sub-scales exhibited good reliability (alpha between 0,705 and 0,774). A sample of 253 school students participated in the study. Results show a significant reciprocal correlation between perpetrators and victims in physical and verbal bullying, both related to its connected symptoms. Results on consequences differentiate among gender (p < 0,001) and age (p = 0,024), but do not take into consideration school grades or the socioeconomic status of the schools. These findings emphasize the need to extend one-way models of bullying used in schools to more dynamic approaches that consider consequences for both perpetrators and victims, and to improve the related prevention programs. © Common Ground, Daniel Tello Silva, Florencia Casanova, Patricia Fuentes, Carla Tapia.
