This paper discusses the history of the Church of Chile from 1800 to 1840. It shows that the tools provided by the Council of Trent at the pastoral level, especially pastoral visits made by the bishops, allowed the Church to deal with the political crisis of 1810, which led to the country's independence. As a result, there were no known interruptions in the management of dioceses and parishes. The creation of the Archdiocese of Santiago in 1840 marked a culmination of the process of transition and opened the way to a new stability of the Church. Furthermore, this path allows one to see how relations between Church and State functioned.
