Previous studies focus on the beneficial mental health effects of religiosity and religious involvement among elderly people. However, evidence in Chile is scant. The present research analyzes the relationship between religious beliefs, type of religion (mainstream and high cost) and religious practice on the one hand, and depression, on the other, using a cross-sectional sample (n=493) of elderly people living in the region of Arica y Parinacota, Chile. Results show that only the combination of religious beliefs and practice is related to lower levels of depressive symptoms. Moreover, belonging to high-cost religions or churches is not protective against depressive symptoms, compared to non-religious elders. Conclusions are drawn paying attention to the concepts of social integration and social support.
