In November 1973, Eduardo Frei Montalva, former president of Chile from 1964 to 1970, sent a letter to Mariano Rumor, ex-prime minister of Italy, in which he described his thoughts regarding the coup d’état that had taken place in his country two months earlier. This article analyzes that letter and the basis for its argument aimed at justifying a regime which established itself from the outset as one of the most brutal in Chile’s history. Conclusions are drawn explaining the birth of a coalition made up of actors who, less than 20 years prior, had maintained irreconcilable political positions.
