The memoirs of Richard Longfield Vowell about his journeys through America in the age of the emancipation wars and the first years of independent life are quite unique. This article examines some of these singularities: the first one is Vowell's narrative style, coherent with his perspective as a witness involved in the facts and, therefore, biased and often includes fragments rather than wholes. The second singularity examined is his anonymity which involved a proposed reading of the memoirs. In effect, by not signing his work, Vowell made his book be potentially read as a search for his identity and the portrait of this unknown character that is himself.
