Introduction: It is now accepted that the presence of abfractions is associated with functional overload. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between occlusal overload and the presence of these non carious lesions by analyzing disclusion guides during mandibular excursive movements. Methodology: A sample of 41 patients were evaluated, in order to look for abfractions, and determining disclusion guides, during protrusive and lateral movements, both clinically and trough casts in a semi-adjustable articulator. Besides, the coincidence between abfractions and the teeth that participated in the guide was tested. Statistical analysis was performed using chi square test. Results: In both lateral an protrusive movements, a statistically significant relationship (p<0,05) between the amount of abfractions and non-functional disclusion guides was found; as well, an overlap between the teeth that guided the excursive movement and the presence of abfractions was observed. Conclusion: A non functional disoclusion guide would be related to the presence of abfractions.
