Latindex, together with the International Standard Serial Number-ISSN, the Fondo Concursable de Publicación de Revistas Científicas Chilenas (Open Fund for Chilean Scientific Journals), the Scientific Electronic Library Online – SciELO, and the Biblioteca Electrónica de Información Científica (Electronic Library of Scientific Information) – BEIC, are the targeted instruments managed by the Scientific Information Program around scientific publications generated in Chile and other countries. Chile has been a member of the Latindex collaborative network through CONICYT’s Scientific Information Program since 1998, thus acknowledging the importance of working jointly in the dissemination and visibility of scientific publications generated in Chile and the Latin American region, and also of establishing criteria on scientific editing for improving the quality of publications. In the case of Chile, the Latindex criteria were used and disseminated as editorial standards for the improvement of Chilean scientific publications, becoming, for the editors, a valid guideline for quality assurance in the editing of their journals. As the National Centre for Chile, there is an active involvement in the Network’s initiatives in order to achieve the goals established by Latindex. Improvements to internal management have also been implemented through comprehensive technological platforms that allow providing a better service both to Latindex users and users of other related instruments managed by the Scientific Information Program. During this time, Latindex has positioned itself at a region-level as an indexing service, which makes the challenge even greater, as it is now expected that it will be able to become a comprehensive service, capable of detecting the current needs and generating products that are appropriate for the new trends in scientific editing.
