This article analyzes the cultural policies regarding free time in Chile during the 1930s. It argues that the progressive reduction of the working hours opened the debate about the promotion of recreational activities for workers, international debates in which many diverse interests converged from intellectuals, public functionaries, businessmen and workers. In particular it addresses the actions promoted by the State regarding the Department of Cultural Affairs created in 1932 and other institutions of its type.
