Transformative experiences are highly emotional subjective experiences that open up new opportunities of meaning and positioning for individuals. Investigation into their influence on learning and their ties to the field of education has been very scarce. This article analyzes the relationship between these experiences and construction of the learner identity. To this end, the authors reviewed the main theoretical focuses used for studying transformative experiences and their relationship to learning. Concepts of peak experience, epiphany, turning points, critical incident, critical experience, meaningful experience, crystallized experience and key educational experience are examined. Using the learner identity model as a reference, the concept of key learning experience is proposed. Finally, the authors reflect on some contributions from this proposal for future research and educational interventions.
