Abstract

At the Los Bronces Copper Mine in Chile, Anglo American operates a 600mm diameter copper ore slurry pipeline. At the time of the start-up, in 1991, it was one of the largest diameter slurry pipelines in the world. In late 2007 expansion of the mine was necessary for the future of the operations and plans were made to increase the capacity of ore treatment, from 61 to 148 ktpd. To reach this elevated level of production Anglo American would need to install a new grinding plant, new concentrator, a larger pipeline and other associated equipment. Design of the new system indicated it would be necessary to install a 700mm diameter ore slurry pipeline operating at different pressures up to 14MPa. Choke stations, needed to control the pipeline hydraulics, would need to be 750mm diameter, as the system in this location would need an internal lining to protect against erosion. This larger capacity presented some unique problems, as slurry ball valves and actuators of this size, operating at this pressure, had never previously been manufactured. Careful conceptual engineering, coordination and planning was needed to execute the project using newly designed valves and actuators. This paper follows that process from the basic valve and actuator specifications in late 2007, through selection of the vendor, manufacturing and testing of prototypes, all the way through to the final assembly and factory acceptance testing. The paper illustrates that when dealing with prototype products the close coordination between end-user, engineering company and the equipment suppliers is critical to the success of any project.
