Gottfried Boehm's proposal of the «iconic turn» is based on the idea that the experience of an image produces a meaning «sui generis» that can only be analyzed considering images autonomously and not by reference to standards that characterize other kinds of experiences. Regarding the current debate in Bildwissenschaft, the iconic turn tends thus towards a unique position different from both semiotic and perceptual approaches. However, although Boehm's distance from semiotic approaches is explicit, his relation to the perceptual standpoint is not yet sufficiently clear. Indeed, several times Boehm describes image experience in terms of a Perceiving. Is Boehm then a perceptualist? How to understand, according to Boehm, the relationship between visual perception and image experience? How to understand the relationship between visual meaning and iconic meaning? This paper will offer an answer to these questions.
