The scope of medical applications for extracorporeal shockwaves (ESWs) continues to widen as our understanding of the mechanisms behind their diverse functionalities increases. The first successful application of ESWs was in the treatment of kidney stones via shockwave lithotripsy. Subsequently, new uses for ESWs, as shown in the other sections of this book, were proposed and have since become viable treatments. The impressive spectrum of indications for shockwaves (SWs), ranging from ischemic cardiac disease to musculoskeletal disorders among others, demonstrates their great potential for benefitting patients presenting disparate diagnoses. On the horizon, there are sure to be more discoveries for new medical applications for SWs. In this chapter, we present some of the newer and lesser known medical applications for shockwaves: mesenchymal stem cells, cancer therapy, wound healing, and biofilm treatment. In addition, it is well known that SWs are effective in treating certain medical disorders as a standalone treatment; in this chapter, however, we present various treatment schemes that show how SWs can be used in combination with other treatment therapies to achieve even better outcomes, opening the door to more effective methods of curing some of the most treatment-resistant pathologies in medicine.
