Exhibits in interactive science museums (science centers) achieve their learning objectives as the interaction of visitors produces the inferences that are expected. We present here a methodology to assess communicational effectiveness of interactive exhibits. The methodology is developed by following Vergnaud's conceptual fields theory and permits us to determine the cognitive processes that exhibits demand from the visitors. We applied this methodology to a particular exhibit on electromagnetic induction at the Museo Interactivo Mirador (MIM), in Santiago, Chile. The necessary data were obtained from the audiovisually recorded visit of a group of secondary students, whose knowledge on the subject was previously analyzed and contrasted with their behavior during the visit.

| We are very grateful to Valeria Vera, Head of Education at MIM, for providing access to the museum and providing everything that we needed to conduct this investigation. We thank the guides of the Electromagnetism section for their assistance in collecting data. In addition, we are grateful to Patricio Torres, Leonardo Herrera, and Roćıo Parrao y Maximiliano Montoya for producing the audiovisual recording of the students’ visit to MIM. We acknowledge and thank Prof. Rodrigo Pérez, Director of the Centro Educacional Vygostky, and the students who participated in the investigation. G.P. acknowledges the hospitality of the Universidad de Talca during his postdoctoral stay and the scholarship that was provided by Banco Santander of Brasil and UFOPA. The conclusions of this study do not represent in any manner a judgment on MIM’s educational proposal. |
