Abstract

Acoustic measurements of six wind farms operating in Chile were carried out. These wind farms are distributed from North to South of the country. Since the north of the country is arid and the south has many forests and rain, the weather conditions were quite different. In addition, the wind farms had different sizes, ranging from 9 to 101 MW. Regarding the methodology, continuous and discrete noise measurements were taken at each wind farm, to show a spatial and time characterization of the wind turbine noise emissions. Wind direction and speed data were simultaneously recorded at the hub height. The results indicate that the noise levels of a wind farm can vary up to 15 dB in a single day due to weather conditions. In addition, highest sound power levels of the wind turbine noise were in the octave bands from 125 to 2000 Hz, with the maximum value at 500 Hz. It is concluded that discrete noise measurements are not representative to characterize the noise levels generated by a wind farm. In addition, the use of correlation between noise and wind speed is essential to assess whether noise levels are produced by wind farm operation or occasional activities.

This project (No. 608897-78-LE17) was funded by the Ministry of Environment of Chile. In addition, the measurements using the beamforming acoustic camera were carried out thanks to the project FONDEQUIP 2015 EQM-150108 “Desarrollo de Aplicaciones en Acústica Mediante la Técnica de Arreglo de Micrófonos de Alta Definición e Imágenes Acústicas”.
