© 2018 Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.This article is an ethnohistoric approximation, supported by the theoretical fundamentals of anthropology, with which we look to provide an interpretive framework of sacrificial practices in the reche-mapucheculture during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Supported by an analysis of chronicles and unpublished documents, the objective of this paper is to understand the role that the diverse procedures played in giving a meaning to the sacrificial practice, but also the combination of symbolic systems that permitted the equivalencies and replacements of those beings (humans and animals) that would be sacrificed. © 2018 Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.El presente artículo es una aproximación etnohistórica, apoyada sobre fundamentos teóricos de la antropología, con la que buscamos entregar un marco interpretativo de la práctica sacrificial en la cultura reche-mapuchede los siglos xVI y xVII. Sustentándonos en el análisis de crónicas y documentación inédita, el objetivo es comprender el papel que representaron los diversos procedimientos que daban sentido a la práctica sacrificial, develando, de este modo, no solo la importancia social que envolvía sino, también, el conjunto de sistemas simbólicos que permitían las equivalencias y reemplazos de los seres (humanos o animales) a sacrificar.
