This paper presents analysis of modular multilevel converters (MMC). Paper starts with submodule configurations, compares their characteristics. Then principle of operation of MMC is explained. Three-phase mathematical model is also presented. Based on mathematical model of MMC, control objectives are highlighted. Also, classical control of MMC is presented, with review of Model Predictive Control methods applied to MMC.
