Tourette's syndrome is a childhood-onset hereditary neurobehavioral disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics associated with obsessive-compulsive and attention deficit disorders. It is believed to occur without geographical restrictions. This article reviews recent advances and current treatment of this disorder. The current evidence involving the desinhibition of corticostriatum-thalamic-cortical neuronal circuits in the pathogenesis of this disorder is analyzed, and new alternatives of treatment are discussed. Tourette's syndrome constitutes a real paradigm for better understanding the complex relationships between the mind (thoughts, emotions) and the body (movement). This is a common disorder that frequently goes undiagnosed in our country
