The article discusses how the anti-Francoist press covered Salvador Allende's government from his election as the first "Marxist" president of Chile until the military coup of 1973. The Spanish media followed Chilean political process, viewing it in light of Spanish history. At first, the Chilean way was presented as a promise for the future. However, as the situation in Chile worsened, the Spanish past figured more heavily. Thus, both great similarities and tremendous differences were identified in an effort to bolster arguments relative to domestic politics. Finally, the breakup of the Chilean democratic system made a profound impact on the anti-Francoist press and produced great political divisions on the eve the transition process.
