Chile is the largest fruit exporter of the Southern hemisphere. Exports in the 2017/8 season comprised 780,000 & x202f;t apples, 751,000 & x202f;t table grapes, 166,000 & x202f;t sweet cherry, 155,000 & x202f;t avocado (80% 'Hass'), 105,000 & x202f;t blueberry and 180,000 & x202f;t kiwi; Chile is the fourth largest kiwi producer worldwide after China, New Zealand and Italy. Fruit production in Chile includes the four temperate zones of Valparaiso, Metropolitana, O'Higgins and Maule at 34-36 degrees S latitude of the long coastal strip. Kiwi and pear acreage both decreased from respectively 12,000 & x202f;ha to 6000 & x202f;ha and from 17,000 & x202f;ha to ca. 9000 & x202f;ha, while avocado declined from 39,000 & x202f;ha to 29,300 & x202f;ha today, whereas the apple acreage remained stable at ca. 36,000 & x202f;ha; blueberries currently occupy 15,600 & x202f;ha. Sweet cherry production, however, of ca. 25,000 & x202f;ha (2500 & x202f;ha under plastic cover) is extending to the South regions of Araucania and Bio-Bio. Apple production is characterized by risk of a late spring frost, combatted by wind machines and heaters, and risk of sunburn, reduced by use of shade net, yielding 60-110 & x202f;t apples/ha, and, with 18 & x202f;mio. inhabitants, aims at a large share of premium fruit for export to the Northern hemisphere such as China, Europe and the US.
