The presence of marine items in cemeteries in the Central Valley in Chile is considered evidence of increased mobility of human groups in response to the variation of crucial resources in distant and heterogeneous geo-ecological areas. Nevertheless, results of C-14 AMS delta C-13 and delta N-15 isotopic analysis in samples from the Tutuquen cemetery (10760-10730 cal. BP and 7260-6890 cal. BP) indicate a diet based eminently on terrestrial resources. The presence of C3 plants and herbivorous animals, and not marine isotopic signals, are evidence of a hunter-gatherer society related to the local landscape. Consequently, the presence of marine items in the Tutuquen cemetery could be related to social and ideological practices.
