Research in the area of multi-word combinations has a long history in applied linguistics, starting with the work by Jespersen in 1924 who introduced the term "collocation". Since then, many studies have attempted to single out the importance of using frequent word sequences in academic discourse, as these expressions are considered as building blocks of discourse thus resulting in better fluency among speakers of a language.
