The analysis of the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio accounts for the tendency of his stories to reveal the difference between "the Mapuche" and "the Chilean", with the aim of identifying an enemy that allows him to promote nationalist feelings by attributing to the Mapuche negative characteristics such as: "savages, barbarians and uncivilized", in the 19th century; "Opportunists, ungrateful and vicious" in the twentieth century; and "lazy, unproductive and enemies of progress", in the 21st century. All of the above, although with nuances in the valuations, indicates that the colonial matrix of power remains practically unchanged.
