The paper analyses the Mexican banking system during 1960-2001, focusing on the financial concentration at the Metropolitan Zone of Mexico City and other world metropolis. The statistical data presented support the hypothesis of a capitalist trend towards the territorial concentration of financial services, and that the level of concentration is higher than in the rest of producer services. At the present stage of development the triple spatial metamorphosis which is inherent to capital accumulation is accentuated as follows: a) consolidation of the world's urban hierarchy with the global cities at the pinnacle; b) agglomeration of services inside the metropolitan areas; and c) high concentration of financial services in one or a few cities in each country. The analysis leads to the conclusion that some producer services, such as banking and finance, constitute an historic category that has been named General Services of Production.
