The phenomena of globalization brings with it much debate and concern about the changes taking place in this new global economy. New technologies are connecting individuals and nations to one another in increasingly rapid ways. The arts are no exception and they have become More international in this global, postmodernist era. Every year different countries host international biennales of art works that often focus on global issues and concerns. The biennales attract people from all over the World and bring with them an infusion of money to the hosting country. The art World has moved from a modernist point of view to a postmodernist one, but the teaching of art in public school lags behind. There are many reasons Why this is Occurring, one is that education is traditionally slow in making changes and the other is that it is increasingly controlled by governmental policies and social pressures. Currently, U.S. education polices are concerned with assessment and test-taking which often leaves little room for the arts. Another reason for this delay is that postmodernist artwork is often ambiguous, subject to multiple readings and interpretations. They raise questions that often don't have clear answers and can focus on sensitive topics. Teachers feel nervous discussing social, cultural and political topics in class, but it is important to remember that the role of teaching is to expand the learning and knowledge of the individual so they can better understand the world around them. I think that we do a great disservice to our students if we do not help them to develop a more compassionate understanding of themselves and others. Art making and the discussion of art works whether traditional or postmodern is a vital part of this learning process.
