Some of the significant factors that need to be considered by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to improve their business operations and management, are discussed. SMEs need to adopt advanced and innovative technologies such as high-pressure processing, ohmic heating, biosensors, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. SMEs need to have some dynamic and innovation technology to respond quickly with the changing markets. SMEs need to take effective measures to overcome the problems of their capital resources and capital funding. The US Department of Agriculture has started Small Business Innovation Research program to provide finance to SMEs. Research and professional organizations are making efforts to improve technology transfer for SMEs for food processing and promote capital investment for emerging industries.
