In globalization, the functional differentiation of society into diverse, quasi-autonomous subsystems has increased, to the detriment of the political orientation of society in legislation and in government. In this new acentric, or polycentric society, technology and social roles are of prime importance, with a progressive depersonalization. The media, together with the vision of culture as information, tend to prevail, centering in on a present that, for lack of projection, is inclined towards the illusory. Catholic social thought confronts the challenge of finding those firmly rooted foundations that will permit it to be faithful to its sapiential patrimony-recovering the totality of the person (which is not exhausted in roles) within the ambit of culture, understood as a space of personal transformation wherein freedom is received as a gift of God, a gift then offered in donation to others. Culture is the intergenerational solidarity that makes society sustainable. Catholic social thought could especially insert itself into the world of labor, education and the media of communication.
