The "Escuela Popular of Valparaiso" was an educational institution founded on the year 1869 by David Trumbull and other cooperators. Its history is connected to the increase of the immigrants flow into Chile in the second half of the 19th century and alongside with it, the entrance of liberal and protestant ideas, also, the prohibition of any religious profession outside the Catholic and the defective primary education project created by the State. The Escuela Popular is an answer to the necessities of the protestant immigrants, the popular sectors of Valparaiso, and a reflection of a contradictory historical moment, in which incorporation and exclusion of foreigners and the popular sectors are related.
