Hans Urs von Balthasar conceives of being, fundamentally, as "fullness pierced through by nothing" -durchnightigte Fulle-. He thus evokes that "actuality" that is not in need of nothing, but that carries nothing within, that is, it carries it along as a possibility that pierces through fullness. Nothing, then, is not an absolute, nor relative, negativity, but a "depth that Balthasar qualifies (differently from Heidegger) as positive," made possible by an origin beyond the absolute and constituted as a gift between fullness and nothing. How can we understand this, if what we are treating of is the gift par excellence that He communicates of Himself-God? How can we penetrate such density, if it is supposed, as Balthasar supposes it, as having its origins by work of the Holy Spirit? These are the questions that guide the present study.
