The research described identifies the desirable and required competences for the degree profile of Social Work graduates at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso (P. U. C. V.). The paper explains the research process developed using survey methodology to study different groups: students, graduates, teachers, educational managers and employers. The study results have allowed us to identify different types of competences (critical, important and complementary) that have served to develop the desirable degree profile for Social Work at P. U. C. V. The present findings will allow us to compare, in a future study, to what extent the current educational curriculum for the social work degree promotes that students acquire the desirable competence profile.
