Flat-slab subduction models based on CHARGE and CHARSME seismic data and gravity observations show a good correlation with the predicted Juan Fernandez Ridge path beneath South America, the deep Moho depths in the Andean backarc, and the high-density and high-seismic-velocity lower crust of the Cuyania terrane. The Cuyania terrane is also the region characterized by more frequent and larger-magnitude crustal earthquakes.

| Financial support for this study came from the U.S. National Science Foundation (grants EAR-9811870 and EAR-0510966), Argentina (projects PICT-0122, CICITCA E814), Chile (FONDECYT 1990355, 1020972, 1050758), and the French Geosciences Azur-L'Institut de recherche pour le developpement. We acknowledge Instituto Nacional de Prevencion Sismica, the National University of San Juan (Argentina), and the Servicio Sismologico from the University of Chile for their logistical support and assistance in the field and the entire CHARGE and CHARSME Working Groups. The instruments used in the CHARGE and CHARSME field experiments were provided by the PASSCAL facility of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology IRIS (USA) and Lithoscope (France). The CHARGE data are available through the IRIS Data Management Center. The National Science Foundation under Cooperative Agreement EAR-0004370 supports the facilities of the IRIS Consortium. Maps were generated using GMT software (Wessel and Smith, 1998). We thank Suzanne Kay, Victor Ramos, Augusto Rapalini, Tony Monfret, Tonya Richardson, and Larry Brown for their comments, suggestions, and corrections, which improved this paper. |
