Until now, there has been a single Paraguayan record of climbing rats of the genus Rhipidomys (Tschudi, 1845), and the specimen has not been identified at the species level. Remarkably, this record has been overlooked in recent mammal lists. Field work conducted in Paraguay during and since 2006 has produced the second and third records of Rhipidomys for this country. We conducted an assessment of external and skull morphologic variation, as well as Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses based on DNA sequences, all of which indicate that all three known Paraguayan specimens of Rhipidomys belong to the species Rhipidomys macrurus (Gervais, 1855). In addition, we provide information distinguishing R. macrurus from some of its congeners, as well as new natural history data. There is now a total of 31 sigmodontine species with published Paraguayan records.

| Barbara Costa, Leonora Costa, and Rita Rocha shared valuable unpublished information about Rhipidomys from Brazil. Bev Morey and Shayna Harris helped with the manuscript. Jim Patton kindly provided some of the new DNA sequences reported in this study.Don Wilson graciously provided pictures of the Smithsonian specimen for comparative purposes. We thank everyone at la Fundacion Moises Bertoni, especially Myriam Velazquez, Rene Palacios, Freddy Ramirez, and all the guarda parques at Reserva Mbaracayu. We also thank all the volunteers and local crews who helped at some point during our trips. Financial support, to the first author, included the Mary Rice Foundation (special thanks to Mrs. Mary Rice); the International Institute for Education (via a Fulbright Scholarship); American Philosophical Society (through the Lewis and Clark Exploration Fund); the Marshall Field Collection Fund of the Field Museum in Chicago; a TTU Association of Biologists (TTUAB) mini-grant; the TTU Graduate School, for an AT&T/McNair Fellowship; assistantships from the Department of Biological Sciences (TTU); a Michelle Knapp Memorial Scholarship (TTU); and a Knox Jones Award (TTU). Robert J. Baker and Heath Garner provided help with logistics at the Natural Science Research Laboratory (NSRL) at TTU. Nancy McIntyre (TTU) and Richard A. Nisbett (Department of Kinesiology, Rice University) helped with traps. Additional support was provided by grant FONDECYT 1110737 to G. D'Elia. |
